As a part of the Long Beach and San Gabriel Valley Football Officials Associations, Corrente started officiating games at the high school and junior college levels in 1971. Corrente served as both a referee and a back judge for seven Junior College Bowl games and three California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Championships between 1971 and 1981.
He was hired in 1981 to work for the Pacific Coast Athletic Association, which eventually changed its name to the Big West Conference. There, he oversaw the Freedom and California Bowls. He worked as a full-time referee in the Big West for the last six years. Corrente joined the Western Athletic Conference’s (WAC) officials in 1991, and he has officiated the Alamo, Aloha, and Rose Bowls since then. On October 8, 2014, Corrente announced his resignation as the Pac-12 Conference’s commissioner of officiating, citing both personal and professional concerns. His resignation followed multiple questionable decisions made by Pac-12 referees in high-profile games, which some thought had a negative impact on the Pac-12 rankings.
In 1995, the NFL hired Corrente as a field judge, and before the start of the 1998 season, he was promoted to referee. During his three seasons as a back judge, he worked two postseason games, including the 1997 NFC Championship Game. He changed his job to referee in 1998, when Gary Lane took over as side judge and Dale Hamer was reinstated as the lead linesman.
On January 19, 2014, in Denver, Corrente was selected to officiate the AFC Championship Game between the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos. He officiated the Green Bay Packers vs. Seattle Seahawks NFC Championship game on January 18, 2015. He officiated the NFC Wild Card game in between Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears on January 6, 2019, which is also renowned for the Double Doink game.
